Masters of Mileage: Car Longevity Standouts

Masters of Mileage: Car Longevity Standouts

Carmakers are in the business of making money by making cars. In order to sell cars, people need to have cars. Cars need to be replaced as the parts of the cars only work for so long. Car longevity has changed over the years. In the mid-century, cars were expected to last for about 100,000 miles. Now, they should last for at least 200,000 miles. Even though most cars will only last for so many miles, there are some people who work hard to be able to drive their cars for an impressive amount of miles.

'63 Plymouth FuryPlymouth Fury Taxi Cab

One car that has been on the road for more miles than ever expected is the 1963 Plymouth Fury that has been driven as a cab by Joseph Vaillancourt. This car has racked up more than 1.6 million miles on the streets of Montreal. The car survived over 35 winters with salt covered roads before it was totaled in an accident with a truck. The Plymouth Fury was restored by a Canadian actor and Vaillancourt was given a new car from Chrysler. The Plymouth Fury now comfortably rests in the Canadian car museum, Musée du Domaine.

Volvo P1800 Coupe

Volo P1800In 1966, Irv Gordon bought a Volvo P1800 to drive on his daily 125-mile commute to work. Today, Gordon still drives the car and it has over 3 million miles on it. Gordon has never replaced the engine. It took him 10 years to get to 500,000 miles and by 1987 he had 1 million miles on the little red coupe. By 2002, he saw 2 million and in 2013, the 3 million mark was hit. Gordon has set the world record for miles driven by one person in a non-commercial vehicle. Gordon has proudly driven in 49 of the 50 states, with Hawaii as the only one left to traverse.

If you are looking to get your cars to last for over 1 million miles, it is important to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations. Regular oil changes and scheduled maintenance will make your car last for a long time and keep you from having to pay car payment for many years.
