Oh, the 1970s. Some of us remember them fondly, while others see bad fashion choices looking back through the picture frame. As with anything, there were good moments and bad, highlights and less exciting moments. In the early 1970s, Plymouth was excited to add a little something exciting to one of its models. The Plymouth Duster made its appearance in 1970 as a compliment to the existing Plymouth Valiant. The Duster served as the performance version of the classic car, the Valiant.
The 1972 Plymouth Duster was a part of the first generation (which ran from 1970-1976). Though there were not many changes for the 1972 model year, the classic car did receive new taillights. With rear wheel drive and two transmission options, a three-speed manual and an automatic, the 1972 Plymouth Duster weighed in at 2830 pounds. The starting price to own a Duster was $2410. Under the front hood rested a 340 cubic inch V8 engine which produced 240 horsepower. The 1972 Plymouth Duster came with an additional option to improve its looks: the Gold Duster package had a canopy vinyl roof, which covered the majority of the roof. Production for the 1972 Plymouth Duster reached a little over a quarter million, at a healthy 228,012 units.
Many things about the Duster gave it a little extra appeal, though major changes were rare for this particular model. Just two years after the model had debuted, the 1972 model year Duster enjoyed success, and is a great classic car to show off at car shows.
