Before buying or selling a classic car, an important factor to consider is its popularity for a number of reasons. Popularity could indicate the odds of selling the car if that is the intention- certainly it is easier to sell something that is in demand. At the same time, however, when buying a classic car, a popular car can make it difficult to find parts, and prices typically reflect that. Indeed, it can be much more expensive to repair a popular classic car. Aside from buying and selling, though, it’s just plain interesting to learn about some of the most popular cars. Here’s a list of 7 of the most popular classic cars. Drum roll, please!

1) The Chevrolet Camaro– in particular, the first generation. The cars themselves are hard to find, as are the parts. Those lucky enough to have one enjoy the in-line 6-cylinder engine or the V8 engine under the hood in this pony car.

2) The Ford Mustang– though it was released before the Chevrolet Camaro, the two are often compared. Even after having sold more than one million cars in under two years after its debut, these first generation models are hard to come by. With up to 210 horsepower, these cars were fast and affordable in their day, retailing for between $2,320 and $2, 557.

3) The Chevrolet Impala– part of the appeal of the Impala is that it hasn’t always been consistently produced. From 1985 to 1994, Chevy decided not to produce the Impala, and took another short break from 1997-1998. You guessed it, the first generation is the most sought-after and the model was available as a coupe or convertible, featuring 235, 283, or 348 cubic inch engines.

4) The Chevrolet Chevelle– Offered between 1964-1977, the Chevelle is one of the greatest success stories from General Motors. Available in many different forms, the Chevelle came with the option of having a 2-door hardtop, convertible, coupe, or sedan, and had the same options for 4-door models. Weighing in at about 1.5 tons, the car was later offered as a Super Sport, giving more power and speed to the popular car.

5) The Chevrolet Bel Air– Noticing a trend here? In the 1960s in particular, Chevrolet rolled out some great cars. Hubpages suggests that due to an increase in the number of models available in recent years, this may be one of the least expensive of popular car models. When it made its debut in 1950, it had a top speed of 85 and a 115 inch wheelbase.

6) The Pontiac GTO– Produced from 1964-1974 and then again from 2004-2006, the Pontiac GTO holds a special place in American classic car history. The earlier models are a favorite among car enthusiasts because of their aggressive appearance and V8 engine rated at 325 bhp at 4800 rpm.

7) The Dodge Charger– Specifically, the 1969 model year, is another popular car. With its bucket seats, rear wheel drive and 23.66 gallon fuel tank, this was a car that commanded respect on the road and still does.

Before buying or selling a classic car, it is of course wise to check into specific model years, but this is a great starting point.
