Alfa Romeo Giulia to the Alfa Romeo Giulia
Old-School Alfa Romeo Giulia
From 1962 to 1978, the Alfa Romeo Giulia was a top selling sedan in Europe. Like most Alfa Romeo models, the Giulia was given a powerful engine with a dual overhead cam four-cylinder. Buyers could choose from a 1.3 L or a 1.6 L engine and the cars had 80 horsepower or 110 horsepower depending in the engine. They all had 5-speed manual transmissions.
The 1960s Alfa Romeo Giulia models were quite square and boxy, even though it has a low drag coefficient for cars of the day. It was comparable to the drag coefficient for the 1960s Porsche 911.
The Giulia from the 1960s was often used as a police vehicle because of the speediness and roominess. The 1969 movie The Italian Job featured several of police versions of the Giulia. There were only 501 of the Alfa Romeo Giulia Supers made and they are highly collectible.
New-School Alfa Romeo Giulia
Now that Alfa Romeo is making a comeback in the United States and around the world, the company is bringing back cars with the same names, but dramatically different styling. The Alfa Romeo Giulia is one of those cars. In order to make an impact on the automotive world, Alfa Romeo designers put their hearts and souls into the newest designs.
When looking at the Giulia from the 1960s and the design of the newest Giulia, it will be difficult to see any relationship at all. The new version will be seriously aerodynamic, without a boxy, square shape in sight. The Giulia will also have a turbocharged engine and possibly even four-wheel drive, or at least rear-wheel drive for exceptional handling. The car was originally slated to be released to only the European markets, but with the success of Fiat in the US, ideas have changed.
