With the continual need to protect important people, it was only a matter of time before automakers began making armored cars for the general public. Just a few short years about the attacks on New York City and Washington D.C. in 2001, Ford decided to create a special Lincoln Town Car, they dubbed the BPS or Ballistic Protection Series.
Special Editions for Protection and Luxury
The Lincoln Town Car BPS was a big step away from their typical special cars. Before the BPS, Lincoln Town Car owners enjoyed special editions like the Cartier, Regatta Edition, Diamond Anniversary, and Jack Nicklaus, and many others. These special editions included luxurious leather seats, fancy chrome wheels, and other features like built in cell phones, moonroofs, and decorative paint trim. The BPS changed the playing field, as this luxurious car was more about the heavy armor and special handling that would help get important people out of harms way when needed.
When Ford decided to create the armored Lincoln Town Car, the decision makers chose to maintain the same look as the unarmored version. After 2001, the cars became desirable as important people and extremely wealthy people wanted to have protection while on the road. Ford worked with manufacturers who developed special glass as well as a bullet-resistant ballistic steel covered with synthetic fibers to protect from bullet shots and explosions.
Added Price and Weight
Since the BPS Town Car was released, Ford has sold a few hundred of the models. Each BPS Town Car weighs nearly twice as much as the typical Lincoln Town Car. The added weight reduces fuel efficiency and increases the price of the car. The original asking price for the BPS Town Car was over $150,000. These are rather rare models that would make a unique addition to a car collection.
