Presidential Cars: So Many Cadillacs
The most powerful man in the world needs to have access to an amazing car. It is no surprise that the Cadillac has become the car of choice for men who have become the President of the United States. Here are a few of the iconic Cadillacs that have been used for presidents:
The Beast
This is the code name for the Cadillac that is used for President Obama. This special Cadillac does not wear a name badge like all of the previous cars, but it was modeled on the popular DTS lineup. The Beast or Cadillac One is loaded with protective features designed especially for the President, like armored body panels and run-flat tires. It also has its own oxygen supply and a blood bank just for President Obama.
I Like Ike
In 1953, Dwight D. Eisenhower rode in a Cadillac Eldorado during his inaugural parade. The white Cadillac Eldorado had a convertible top that gave President Eisenhower the opportunity to wave to his adoring fans while one Secret Service agent walked watchfully along the side. This two-door Cadillac Eldorado was one of the first Cadillac Eldorado models to be used by an American president and it set the trend for years to come.
Al Capone’s Cadillac
The safety of the President has always been important. So, after Pearl Harbor was attacked, President Franklin D. Roosevelt needed a safer car, but there was a limit to the price that the government could pay for a car for the president. Rumor has it that the best option at the time was a 1928 Cadillac that was first owned by Al Capone. This car was said to be bulletproof, which made it a perfect choice for FDR. Whether he really rode in the Capone Cadillac or not, remains a mystery.
Prior to President Reagan’s two terms in the office, Cadillacs were not commonly used. But, in 1983, his administration was given a Cadillac Fleetwood limo and a Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham. Like the Capone Cadillac, there is a rumor about the Reagan Cadillac limo, but the Reagan rumor has been proven false. The car was never used in the film In the Line of Fire from 1993. Due to the secretive features of presidential cars, they are only used to transport the President.
