Open Diff – what phantom cars would you like to see?

1949Fordfastback_1000

We’ve got a lot more photochops bookmarked where that last batch came from, but rather than pushing more wild woolly flights of fancy on you too soon, we thought we’d take a tangent here and ask what phantom cars you’d like to see built (or would like to build yourself).

Phantom cars, while not stock in the pure sense of the word, aren’t mere hot rods or customs either. Nor are they mix-n-match AnyCars. Rather, they slightly re-mix production line cars into something that the factories conceivably could have built, but didn’t. They’re alternative histories; they’re like imagining what would have happened if X car company decided to do Y.

Take, for instance, the image above. Dan Palatnik’s a gifted illustrator who often renders a given car in stock form and then adds his own twist: In the above instance, he added a Kaiser Traveler or Henry J-inspired fastback to a 1949 Ford. Whether it works or not, it’s fun to speculate.

So what sorts of twists would you add? Woodie-ify everything? Convertible-ize early Eighties cars? Make breadvans or four-doors out of your favorite sports cars? Leave your suggestions in the comments below, and maybe we can get some of our resident photochoppers to render your ideas.
