Since 1986, Hot August Nights (HAN) has been drawing hot rod and custom car fans from around the globe to Reno, Nevada, “The Biggest Little City in the World.” This year, absent former auction partner and title cup sponsor Barrett-Jackson, HAN has reinvented itself, partnering with Motorsport Auction Group on a new sale and, courtesy of fresh sponsor Downtown Reno, continuing to deliver one of the richest prizes in the custom car world.

Now called the Hot August Nights Cup, the Ultimate Best of Show winner stands to collect a prize package worth nearly $42,000, including a cash payout of $30,000, the same amount offered under the previous sponsorship. Additional prizes include a customized tool box, a five-night stay at the Eldorado Hotel for HAN in 2017, a gift certificate for McCollister’s Transportation, a $500 gift certificate for Optima Batteries, $500 worth of Adam’s Premium car care products, a $500 gift certificate for AMSOIL products, the Hot August Nights jacket, and trophies for both the owner and builder.

Second-place finishers receive $18,000 in cash plus prizes, while third through fifth place pays $10,000, $7,000, and $5,000, respectively. Counting cash and prizes, the awards pay out over $100,000 to car owners who work their way up the ladder system of judging used to arrive at the Ultimate Best of Show winning vehicle. Competition begins on 4th Street in downtown Reno on Wednesday, August 3, and on Friday, August 5th the top-10 qualifiers are chosen for display inside the Reno-Spark Convention Center. At 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 6, the winner of the Hot August Nights Cup (as well as the other four finalists) is announced at 4th and Virginia Street in downtown.

This year’s automobile auction, held at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center, stretches from August 4-6 and is capped by the sale of GM Futurliner Number 3 (Power of the Air Age), scheduled to cross the block at 2:00 p.m. on August 6. As in years past, there’s no shortage of live music throughout the six-day event, which also includes a swap meet and car corral, plus autocross, drifting, drag racing and burnout competitions.
